Jaguar’s First Electric Car Design 2017-18 (Concept)

It’s been decades since we’ve been expecting flying cars and what not. While we haven’t quite got there (or anywhere near it) manufacturers haven’t been doing THAT bad a job at mimicking the mind-boggling designs we see in our favorite movies.

Innovatively speaking, the automotive industry has been making gains at their own pace. And while jaguar had been seeing a decline in the revenue department in 2015-16, they’re still living up to their name creativity-wise, even prior to their stunning comeback in 2016-17.

If you’ve been a longtime fan of Jaguar’s work from the SS100 to the flashy and bold sports car lines, you might want to hear about what they’ve been working on in the lab. Only this vehicle isn’t the traditional coupe or touring car many of you would expect.

Actually, this thing doesn’t even run on gas.

Based on the F-Pace (image above), the new I-Pace is from the SUV line. An electric powered vehicle that they claim will have a range of 220 miles. Something that will make Jaguar’s very first electric vehicle give other big names a run for their money. And with the F-Pace being their largest selling model shortly after going on sale it’s only natural they’ll be confident in the new model based on its trendsetting predecessor.

The I-Pace was announced at the LA Auto Show on November 15, 2016, and ever since then I’ve been dying to know more.

So I did my research and here’s what I found out!

Practically built from Scratch

In spite of being based on the F-Pace SUV line, the company practically went back to the drawing board on the I-Pace. Bringing enough new features (in the form of bold promises) to make the I-Pace stand on its own as a powerful electric vehicle, making waves in terms of design and power.

No Engine, No Worries

According to Ian Callum (Jaguar’s design director), the fact that they didn’t have to accommodate for an engine allowed for some interesting design choices (and benefits). For one, the cab could be extended forward in what they call a cab-forward design. What this gives way for is a wider wheelbase, and a short hood, allowing the I-Pace to flex more aggression than its cousin the F-Pace.

The impressive wheelbase was decided by the number of batteries they needed to fit between axles.

The Cab-forward design is great for other reasons as well. It also makes for strong haunches at the front of the unit. You may notice something similar in the Jaguar CX75, and the bonnet scoop towards the back helps to reduce drag.

Also, the sitting position now has more freedom and is closer to the front wheels. With the wheels farther out, a vehicle’s driving will be affected positively to some degree.

No Metal Roof

Being a concept car, they went bye-bye with the metal roof. Instead, you have a glass ceiling so you can master the road while passengers enjoy the sky.

As for the Range

No matter who you are if you’re purchasing an electric vehicle you’ll want to know about the range. Jaguar is aiming for 220 miles between charges. A bold claim that (if true) will be sure to challenge competitors like the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3 who both promise similar performance.

What about Power?

The (AWD) I-Pace is powered by motors on the front and rear axles. This allows it to put out 400 horsepower paired with a solid 516 pounds of torque. Also, there is a 90kWh Lithium-ion battery pack neatly located under the passenger compartment.

‘An electric car without compromise’ is what Jaguar is going for here. A bold claim, but the presentation is good enough to make you a believer.

The I-Pace still has some way to go, but Jaguar claims the performance won’t be much different from what was presented at the LA Auto Show. It’s expected that the I-Pace will cost between 10% – 15% more than an F-Pace equivalent.

If the promises regarding performance do remain the same, a 220 – 300-mile range is pretty impressive. They also claim the I-Pace will be able to achieve a speed of 62MPH from a single dash. The time frame? Sixty seconds!

It’s possible that the interior of Jaguar’s I-Pace may undergo changes. But you won’t be mad at what the concept has going for it so far. Its dashboard lined with Alcantara and aluminum paired with open-grain wood veneers. The leather upholstery adds a mature quality to the design. This particular design choice was repeated on the speakers and panoramic sunroof. And it doesn’t look half bad.

Interestingly, while the open-grain wood and leather touches do add some character to the cabin, it’s still a bit on the tech-laden side. With three display screens and a 12-inch touchscreen for infotainment purposes. While not too far in front of the driver is another 12-inch screen substituting for an instrument panel.

Lastly, there is a 5.5-inch screen thrown in with a pair of rotary dials for regulating air conditioning and climate control features. Of course, there’s enough gadgetry here to warm the heart, including onboard WIFI.

More Room than you can Handle

Jaguar's First Electric Car, I-Pace Interior  The I-Pace essentially offers an alluring new aluminum platform; compact size for the electric motors —each with an outer diameter of 234mm and a length of 500mm. In other words not only will the cabin boast a decent amount of space — it sounds like they’re trying to have someone throw a party inside this thing.

Technical similarities to the F-Pace

Much of the features here will seem familiar to the F-Pace SUV. If you’re well acquainted with the line you’ll recognize the double wishbone front suspension. Not to mention the compact integral link rear suspension. Solid features that (traditionally) don’t disappoint.


The lithium batteries were developed in-house, and the pouch cells are implemented for energy density and all-around efficiency.

Charging and Center of Gravity

As far as charging goes, so far we can expect to get an 80 percent charge in 90 mins. And 10o percent in 2 hours from a 50kw DC point. Electronics sit low in the car giving it a center of gravity 120mm lower than the F-Pace. This is good news for those concerned with how the I-Pace may react to cornering, accelerating and braking.

A bit on the Heavy Side

If there’s one thing that will raise an alarm about the I-Pace it’s the weight. It’s expected that Jaguar’s debut EV will weigh around 2100kg. Yeah, you read that right. However, that shouldn’t be getting in the way of the performance. And Jaguar, naturally, claims that the vehicle will handle as consumers would expect.

Boot Space and Dimensions?

With regards to dimensions and boot space, marginally speaking the I-Pace is smaller than its predecessor the F-Pace — with the I-Pace being 50mm shorter. It’s also 90mm lower and around 40mm narrower.

The wheelbase, however, is 115mm longer and drivers will have more room inside in comparison to the F-Pace. In fact, Jaguar claims that you’ll have 10mm more room than with the BMW 7 Series.

Moving forward — the I-Pace should have a boot space of 530 liters. That’s 120 liters less than you would have in the F-space. If there’s any bright side to that conundrum is the fact that you get an additional 20 liters of space under the bonnet.

Also if you’re really creative about it the flood floor can accommodate up to 8 liters of storage between front seats.

The I-Pace may feature a low front and short overhang, but you’ll notice there’s still a bold front grill frame neighboring slim lights much like on the F-Pace. Callum believed it was essential to establish the front of the jaguar most notably. Many recent models boast headlights with double J-blades and it would seem that feature is going nowhere soon.
